Moving a home & living catalog from WooCommerce without discarding search URLs
A planned WooCommerce to Shopify cutover: products, customers, content and a redirect table treated as a deliverable — not a launch-day spreadsheet.
Challenge
The merchant needed Shopify’s operations model but had years of product, collection and blog URLs already in Google’s index. A theme-first rebuild would have been the easy pitch. It would also have thrown away search equity. This write-up is anonymized. We do not publish client names or ranking percentages unless the merchant has approved verified figures.
Starting point
WooCommerce with a customized permalink structure, mixed simple and variable products, and a blog that still attracted buying-intent traffic. Analytics and Search Console were available; the theme was not the constraint — data and URLs were.Strategy
1. Inventory every indexable URL before touching Shopify.2. Map products, variants, customers and blog posts to Shopify objects.
3. Design redirects as a reviewed table, not an app dump.
4. Build the Shopify storefront in parallel only after the catalog model was stable.
5. Watch coverage and redirect errors after DNS cutover.
Implementation
Staging store for imports. Variant options normalized so Shopify did not invent extra products. Customer accounts handled with a reset/invite plan because password hashes do not travel cleanly. Theme work stayed on unpublished theme until the redirect map passed review. Post-launch: sitemap submitted, old XML sitemaps retired, sample of money pages checked in Search Console. Results
The store launched on Shopify with a complete redirect map and a catalog the team could edit. We do not claim a ranking number here. The operational result was a cutover the merchant could explain to their warehouse and their SEO lead on the same day.If you are planning a similar move, start with the Shopify migration page and the WooCommerce guide in Resources.
